Understanding Hair Loss

Healthy hair is constantly renewing itself through a natural growth cycle. As shown in the diagram above, each hair follicle progresses through four distinct stages:

  • anagen (growth)
  • catagen (transition)
  • telogen (resting)
  • exogen (shedding)

At any given time, most scalp hairs are in the anagen phase, actively growing, while a smaller percentage are resting or naturally shedding.

Hair loss can occur when this cycle becomes disrupted. The growth phase may become shorter, more hairs may enter the resting or shedding phase prematurely, or hair follicles may gradually shrink over time, producing finer, thinner hairs. These changes can result from genetics, hormonal changes, aging, stress, certain medications, nutritional deficiencies, or underlying medical conditions.

Understanding how the hair growth cycle works is the first step in identifying the underlying cause of hair loss and selecting an appropriate treatment approach.

Common Types of Hair Loss

Hair loss is not a single condition but a group of disorders with different underlying causes. Identifying the type of hair loss is an important first step, as each condition may require a different treatment approach. Common types include:

  • male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
  • female pattern hair loss
  • telogen effluvium
  • alopecia areata.

At Atria, we specialize in personalized treatment for male and female pattern hair loss, providing customized topical formulations tailored to each individual's needs.

Treatment Options for Topical Hair Formulations

Topical hair loss treatments are applied directly to the scalp to target the hair follicles where hair growth occurs. Depending on the underlying cause of hair loss and individual treatment goals, a physician may prescribe ingredients such as

  • minoxidil
  • finasteride
  • dutasteride
  • spironolactone
  • adenosine
  • caffeine

Because every individual responds differently, topical formulations can often be customized in terms of active ingredients, concentrations, and dosage forms, such as a solution or foam, to improve tolerability and suit different hair types and scalp conditions.

Personalized Hair Loss Formulations

Every individual's hair loss journey is unique. Factors such as the type of hair loss, scalp condition, previous treatment response, lifestyle, and treatment goals can all influence which ingredients and formulation are most appropriate. Through a physician consultation, we provide personalized topical hair formulations that may combine science-backed ingredients in customized strengths and dosage forms to suit your individual needs.
